Reflections

Learnscope is almost over for this year and in some ways we're just getting started ... I guess that's because we're so much more aware of what a huge field audio is... and of the interesting possibilities for teaching and learning.

If I were to do it all again I think I'd limit the number of audio tools explored to avoid getting overwhelmed. I also think I'd program in more time in the computer room to actually experiment with new tools. It's so easy to go to a training session and then a week later forget what you've learned because you haven't had time to put it into practice.

The potential for ways in which we can use audio and other emerging technologies in distance education is enormous - it will add flexibility to our delivery and will allow us to create appealing, varied and exciting new materials. It will also challenge, refresh and extend our teaching practice....well that's the plan....

Elearning 06, off and running

As the title says, the Learnscope showcase at Randwick racecourse has just finished. Audiodynamism's presentation was on at ten in the morning. Like all others presenters, we only had a ten minute slot to give a snapshot of our elearning project. I knew I had waffled on a bit about pedagogy when Bob asked me "later, "so I didn't get from your presentation what you are actually doing"! (Luckily Anna & Dilys were at hand to point out ways in which they're enriching student learning with social software tools.) So here's a brutally short summary. So far we have:
  • thought about ways in which audio could be used in our particular context of distance learning
  • researched existing resources/projects that have audio applications
  • learnt about sound basics such as files, settings, bit/sample rates
  • created, recorded & edited audio resources with open source software
  • become friends with an array of mp3 players, G3 phones, headsets, IPAQs, gadgets galore
  • dabbled with other voice technolologies such as audioblogging, voiceboards
  • loaded audio up into our learning support website forums
  • tapped into free podcasting sites for distribution & created RSS feeds for blogs
  • got to know what other like-minded individuals are doing with audio

Other team members could no doubt add many other points.
BTW - keynote presenter George Siemens was again an engaging speaker. What he says about networked learning makes a lot of sense, although I'm inclined to think some learning is asocial. Anyone who has had to learn different cases in German as a second language learner, for example, will know that this is largely rote learning, albeit used when mastered for a social purpose. George does make a point of saying though that we have to consider the context and purpose of learning firstly.

Blogging from the mouths of the horses!

Check out the new episode of our podcast - Michael Nelson & Colin Tyrell talk about blogging in the Blue Mountains (WSI TAFE NSW.) It's about 15 minutes long & 2.4MB

I can vouch for the fact that these guys know what they're talking about because I spent precious little time having to edit it for the podcast! With editing other presentations, I've had to cut out a lot of context specific stuff and other waffly bits. Colin, Michael - your words travel well from April...

Audioblogger is no more

First off - the good news - an update of where the project is up to, listen to this learnscope interview with Alex Hayes:
http://nswlearnscope.podomatic.com/entry/2006-10-05T22_25_40-07_00

Disappointing news: "as of November 1, 2006, Audioblogger will no longer accept phone calls." Damn! Paula Williams and myself attended a fantastic workshop with Micheal Coughlin (see previous posting) where we were totally excited about Audioblogger and how easy it was to use with students. I even made blow-by-blow instructions on how to use it for teachers and conscientiously posted them to our intranet website

Just goes to show that you can't get too attached to proprietary ways of doing things in the Web 2.0 world. The concepts & skills are the thing. Has anyone checked out Audioblogger's recommended links below?
